Jesus Celebrates Passover #

Mark 14:12-17

Introduction

We left off last time with Judas already going to the chief priests and conspiring to betray Jesus. In his mind he had already decided this was the path to take. There was still time to turn around, he had not actually done it, only committed to doing it. We find the disciples after that in one of the most close knit, intimate times, when the disciples are with Jesus for one of the last times. Every one of them is gathered.

I. The Preparation (Mark 14:12-17) #

A. Directions #

i. Into the city – the passover was to be eaten in the city. #

• The original passover took place in individual houses in Egypt
• It was later clearly to be moved to Jerusalem.

Deuteronomy 16:5–6 —5 Thou mayest not sacrifice the passover within any of thy gates, which the Lord thy God giveth thee: 6 But at the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.

• Jesus, was firm on following the Scripture, and not merely tradition.

  • Everything the Word of God says, is important!

ii. Man carrying water – probably a servant #

• • I believe this to be Jesus knowing what is taking place in the future. God gave him knowledge.

B. Discretion – two disciples sent #

i. There would not be a large gathering #

ii. Judas would not know where to send soldiers #

iii. A large upper room – privacy, not ground level, not easily accessible. #

C. Diligence of the Disciples #

Diligence – steady application in business of any kind; constant effort to accomplish what is undertaken; exertion of body or mind without unnecessary delay

i. God’s Directions are never wrong! “found as he had said unto them” #

• They found exactly what Jesus had told them. – He is the WORD!

ii. They gave the message – vs 14 #

iii. They did what they were told – “they made ready the passover” #

II. The Phony Pretender (Mark 14:18-21) #

B. The Doubtfulness (19) #

i. Judas had blended in so well, no one suspected him. #

• • To us, we have read the history, we know what takes place, we judge everything Judas does as bad, because he betrayed the LORD!

ii. The Disciples wondered if it would be them! “Is it I?” #

C. The Dipping (20) #

i. Cultural understanding #

• We tend to look at these situation with a very western mindset and culture, but this was an eastern culture. Eating is very different. Bread would be served, as large pieces, and everyone would break off some, and dip it in the same dipping sauce. – All the disciples had dipped with Jesus.

Psalm 41:9 — Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

**Psalm 55:12–14 **—12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. 14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

• This had been prophesied!

ii. Kindness demonstrated! – dipping and handing the sop (bread) was kindness #

John 13:26 — Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

D. The Denunciation (21) #

• Strong denunciation that Jesus made about Judas Iscariot

III. The Passover meal (Mark 14:22-26) #

A. Bread #

i. Unleavened bread #

• Leaven was a type of sin…

1Cor. 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

• Leaven – any substance that produces or is designed to produce fermentation, as in dough, or liguids. Yeast.
• Yeast – it only takes a little bit, and all the bread is affected by it!

ii. Jesus body, was pure from sin! #

iii. Broken #

Isaiah 53:5 — But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

• Jesus was letting his disciples know, that he would be beaten, broken for them!

iv. Some people believe that taking communion, it transforms into the body of Christ, the Bible never teaches this. -WRONG #

B. Cup #

i. Grape juice, not wine #

ii. Represents the blood of Jesus! #

1 Peter 1:18–19 —18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

iii. Jesus suffered bled and died for your sins. #

• He didn’t die so you could live a wicked sinful vile life… God wants you to be saved, and to CHANGE!
