Set your Mind to it #

1 Chronicles 28:8-10

Introduction

We are staying within the series of the mind, but we are expanding it a little to the future. It really is a message to the next generation. I’m 50 years old, I have more years behind me than I have in front of me. However, I want the influence, and impact of my life to count for the cause of Christ. I’m not resigning to be done, there is much work to do.

• David had already appointed Solomon as king over Israel.

1Chr 23:1 — So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

In our passage, David has reached his final days as king. He was not a young strong soldier, he was old and his strongest days were now behind him. He was 70 years old!

2 Samuel 5:4–5 —4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

• I’m not quite that old, but we must always be managing our present time, as well as looking down the road, and deciding where we are headed!

We are looking at the charge that David issues the following generation, Solomon is taking the throne, and David is giving him a great charge. – I have a message for our next generation! A challenge, an encouragement

I. Importance setting (8) #

• This is the setting that is taking place.
• The church does NOT take the place of Israel… but there are some parallels that I’m drawing here, and making application that are very fitting!

A. The Congregation #

i. The congregation refers to the nation of Israel. #

ii. Church – a collective body of christians (saved and baptized believers) #

• There is something about getting together with other believers, for the purpose of worshipping God.
• The church in Acts 2 had gotten together, for preaching of the Word.

Acts 2:47 — Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

• • Church size?

Matthew 18:20 — For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

• • You don’t have to have 1000’s like they did in the Book of Acts, where thousands were added to them in one day!
  • A church is a church if there are just a few members, there are no small or large churches in God’s eyes, they are just God’s churches! – We often get too caught up in the size of the congregation, and neglect the fact that we are God’s Congregation!

iii. Stay in Church! #

Acts 20:28 — Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

• • You cannot be out of church, and right with God!

    • Watching is not the same as attending!

Hebrews 10:25 — Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

B. The Commandments of God #

i. Stay in the Book! #

• The Word of God must remain the primary thing in our life!
• When you stray from the Word of God, you are straying from God himself!

ii. Keep & Seek #

• Obey, and continue to search the Scriptures!
• They cannot be abandoned, or disobeyed!

C. The Children #

“that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children afer you for ever.”

i. Posses the land #

• There is spiritual implication paralleled for us in Hebrews… spiritually, we need to posses the land, the Kingdom of God in our life!

ii. Pass it on to your children! #

• There is great importance that our children learn the things of God!

  • Parent’s raise your children in church, and with the Bible

  • Put a high priority on church!

    • More is caught than is taught. – You can teach one thing, but if your actions show something else, that is what will be learned practiced.

  • Put a high priority on personal devotions with the Lord!

    • Practice it, and teach them to do the same.

II. Instruction (9-10) #

A. Salvation “Know the God of my father” #

i. Don’t just know who God is, but get to KNOW GOD! #

• • David didn’t just know that there was a God in heaven, but rather grew to know who God was, and what God expected! What pleased God.

B. Serve “serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind” #

i. “perfect heart” – singular love, and priority #

• • Complete, or whole

Matthew 22:37 — Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

ii. “willing mind” #

iii. “for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts” #

• • God knows your very thoughts, and every imagination of your thoughts!
  • No one understands you better than God himself!

C. Seek him! #

i. You will find him! “he will be found of thee” #

ii. Don’t forsake him “IF thou forsake him” #

iii. Don’t count on the second chance – “he will cast thee off for ever” #

• Not that you will lose your salvation, but the blessing of God would be removed… this happened to Solomon! Learn from his lesson!
