Majestic Work of God #

Psalm 111

Introduction

This is a phenomenal Psalm that renders great praise to the LORD. The psalmist manages to capture the great attribute of God’s eternality, and brings to light the work of the Lord. It is quite an inspiring Psalm.

The Psalm starts out with Praise to the LORD. This is certainly appropriate for what is about to be displayed about God.

I. The Eternality of God #

  • The eternality of God is repeated throughout the Psalm, making it a solid point throughout the Psalm. – God must be eternal for these things to be for ever.

A. The Character of God “righteousness endureth for ever” (3) #

i. Established in the past #

  • God never has done wrong!
  • If you settle that now, it is easier to accept in your own life!

ii. Established going forward! #

iii. God is without SIN! #

1 John 1:5 — This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

  • No darkness of sin! Only light, holiness!

iv. NEVER Changes! – “endureth for ever” #

B. The Covenant of God is for ever (5, 9) #

Covenant – formal, solemn, binding written agreement, God will not break his end.

i. Physical provision (5) #

  • God does not forget, or break his covenant!

ii. Redemption (9) #

  • “sent redemption” – that is a past tense form… and yet had not happened. Jesus work on Calvary, is our redemption.
  • Covenant of redemption both for OT, and NT saint is eternal!

C. Commandments of God (7, 8) #

  • The Word of God is an eternal book!

i. Sure – certain, unfailing, infailable (7) #

ii. Stand #

  • FAST – literally, set, stopped, fixed, or pressed close, firm immovable, FOREVER

II. The Engagement of God - the work of God #

A. The Great Works (2) (excellent) #

  • As your read through the OT, you cannot help but notice the excellence of God!
  • The Works of God bring great pleasure, delight, and joy to us!

i. Realizing and understanding how God engages with man, is a blessing to see! #

B. The Glorious Works (3) (splendor) #

  • The work of God is great to behold, to stop and focus on.
  • God gave us eyes to behold, and see things with!
  • Can you imagine seeing the Works of God with your own eyes!
  • Watching the fire fall from heaven and consume the sacrifice on Mt. Carmel!
  • Watching the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace, walking around.
  • Watching Jesus cause the Lame to walk, and the deaf to hear! GLORIOUS!

C. The Grand Works (4) – Majestic & Memorable #

  • Creation… while we live in it, it would have been incredible to see!
  • The Parting of the Red Sea!
  • David Killing Goliath – memorable!

D. The Gauge of His Works (6) “power” #

  • The POWER of God’s works

    • The Power of God’s miracles is certainly glorious, grand, and great.
    • However God’s miracles are a clear demonstration of his power!

E. The Genuineness of His Works (7) #

  • Verity - a truth, or being true, authenticated.
  • The judgement of God, is genuine, and right.

III. The Expectation of God (10) #

A. Fear Him #

i. “Fear of the LORD” is used some 30 times in the Bible! #

  • Fear – 3. profound reverance and awe especially toward God
  • Having talked about the works of God, when you see them, it is easier to stand in AWE of HIM!

ii. When you read His Works in the Bible! #

  • You learn of His engagement with Man, but you can also experience God’s work in your life!
  • He may not part the Red Sea for you, as that was an exceptional miracle on a national level, but the point is not the grandeur of His miracles, but the fact that He will work in your life!
  • Have a great respect and awe for who God is!

iii. The Key to Wisdom! #

  • If you don’t have a respect, awe and reverence for God, you cannot have wisdom!

B. Fulfillment of His Word “do his commandments” #

i. God didn’t write them so that we could just read them, and understand them. #

ii. God wrote them with the intention we would “DO” Them! #

James 1:22 — But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

iii. If you read, but you don’t “DO” the Word, you are fooling/deceiving yourself. #

  • You think you are good, but you are not.

  • You think God is pleased, but He is not.

    • That is what the hypocrites do.
