Portrait of the Blessed #
Psalm 112
Introduction
We have a great Psalm before us. It is easy reading, easily understood, and a great encouragement to the born again believers that walk with the Lord. It should be a blessing to every single person tonight.
A lot of people have anxiety, insecurities, fears, dismay, dread or great concerns about the future. However, as a Christian, we should be anchored in the Rock. This Psalm calms our fears, insecurities, dismay, or anxiety. Verses 7 & 8 give us the key to calm our fears:
Psa. 112:7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
An entire message could be brought simply on those two verses.
Psalm 111 reveals the Wonderful Works of God, while Psalm 112 reveals the Portrait of a Person blessed by God!
There are 7 points, so we will not park too long on any of them.
I. The Conditions (1) #
- Many people try to claim the promises of God, and ignore the conditions God places on the promises. Often times God’s promises start with… If you do this… then I will do this.
A. Praise the LORD! #
B. Feareth the LORD (1a) #
- While it was a couple of weeks ago, we talked about this in Psalm 111:10
Psa. 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
i. The opposite of that is not true #
- Those who do not fear the LORD, are not blessed!
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
ii. The stand condemned before God! #
C. Delighteth greatly in his commandments (1b) #
- Often times the words, Commandments, Statutes, Word of God, Law of the Lord, Testimonies, precepts, judgements, truth, Scriptures refer to the Bible. Each one focuses on a different aspect of the Bible.
-
The Commandments – what God expects of us… should be delighted in by us!
- If you ask your teenager to do something, and they jump up, and sure Dad, I would be happy to do that for you! - That is the response that God desires. “delighteth in his commandments”
II. The Children (or Character) (2) #
A. Offspring (2a) #
- Raise your children to be in church, lead by example.
B. Following generation (2b) #
- Your children will be blessed by your righteousness, and should carry it forward.
III. The Capital (3) #
A. Wealth and riches #
- We typically think of physical wealth and riches… however there is something far greater than physical wealth and riches!
- Don’t take this and teach it as a physical wealth… the second phrase will not allow it!
Matt. 6:19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
-
The greatest riches and wealth you can have are not physical, but spiritual!
- They cannot be lost, stolen, corrupted, or destroyed.
B. Righteousness endureth #
- Clearly this is not a human righteousness, but a divine righteousness given to man, and a sealing of it, to make it last for ever!
IV. The Comprehension (4) #
A. Light (4a) #
-
Read that phrase carefully, it doesn’t promise that darkness will not come.
- We will have trials, hardships, and as the Psalmist put it in Psalm 23… we will walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
i. Light ariseth! – is not self generated #
- While it doesn’t promise we will not have darkness, we are assured, that God gives light!
Psa. 119:105 ¶ NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
- Delight in his commandments!
B. Gracious, compassionate, righteous in hard times. #
- True character is often displayed in the most rigorous of testing
- To test the strength of steel, they add weight, until it starts to strain and crack
V. The Charitableness (5, 9) #
A. Favorable #
i. Giving #
- Not Scrooge.
- Favorable – kind, friendly, contributing
ii. Disperse – give out (9) #
B. Discretion #
-
He is wise in his business – The righteous man is charitable, but not careless.
-
People often think that Christians should be the door mat for everyone to wipe their feet on, and take advantage of.
- It is often thought, because you are a christian, you should just give to everybody.
- This verse paints quite a different picture: “guide his affairs (business) with discretion”
VI. The Confidence (6-8) #
A. Not be moved (6) #
i. Faithfulness! – We have faithful people to our church! Thank the LORD! #
ii. Eternal faithfulness – Work now, in heaven, we are secure. (cannot lose salvation) #
B. Not Afraid (7-8) #
i. Not afraid of bad news (7a) #
- Why??? “because his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD” – established!
