Committed to God #
Psalm 119:41-48
Introduction
This portion is cleanly divided into two different ideas. As a result I only have two points. However, you can think of them as two messages, as each one could very well be separate messages. I will give them both to you, but in an effort to better help us, we are going to focus on the second portion. The first portion is verses 41-43, and the second point comes from verses 44-48.
I. The Concern, or Plea (41-43) #
A. The Mercies of God (41) #
The Psalmist recognizes his weakness, frailty, sinfulness, and begs for MERCY
- People today are claiming grace while running to sin
- The Psalmist is running from sin, and pleading mercy!
- People use grace as an entitlement for everything they think they should get
- Psalmist recognizes he isn’t worthy of anything, but just wants God to be merciful to him.
“According to thy word”
B. The Meeting of Critic (42) #
The Psalmist is worried about the critic, the reproach given to him
- When you walk with God, live according to His word, you can stand head held high
- No regrets – Not a claim to perfection, understanding our own flaw.. but doing our best.
C. The Ministry (43) #
- To be used of God, not to be put on a shelf!
- Many people have fallen in ways that they cannot be used in the same capacity as before.
II. Promise (44-48) #
The Psalmist devotes the rest of his time to promises that he makes to God!
Again, we note the opposite direction of the ‘Grace miss-claimers’ than that of the ‘Mercy claimer’
- Mercy is God not punishing us as our sins deserve, while grace is God blessing us despite the fact that we do not deserve it (unmerited favor). – Those constantly claiming grace, often use it in an entitled way, specifying what they think is owed them.
Jude 4 — For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
A. The Wedding Commitment (44) #
i. “Keep thy law” #
Obedience to God’s Word
Some people want to think they are ok with God, but never step foot into a church, never crack their Bible open, and never talk about God to anyone.
- I worship God in the woods, on the lake, in the cabin
- But God loved the church, and gave his life for it, and they don’t even attend it!
ii. “For ever and ever” #
Ecclesiastes 5:4–5 —4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
- David was NOT perfect, but he was faithful!
B. The Walk Commitment (45) #
i. Walk at liberty #
- Someone that is married, is committed to another person… they are looking, they are at liberty to know they are accepted, and loved!
ii. Seek God’s approval! – through his Word! #
C. The Witness Commitment (46) #
i. Talking (POSITIVELY) about their spouse! #
- Some people talk poorly of their spouse, don’t be running down your spouse in front of others!
- Happily married.
- Be content with God, be proud of the fact that you have God on your side!
ii. Before Kings - #
- King’s – the most powerful people on earth…
- It doesn’t matter if they are the most powerful on earth, you know the most powerful in the universe!
iii. Not ashamed #
Romans 1:16 — For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
D. The Warmth Commitment (47) #
- Warmth as in a passionate, enthusiastic love, a delight.
i. Delight in God’s Commands! #
- This is not something that you generate, because you have to.
- It is a genuine appreciation and love for God’s Word.
ii. Don’t let God’s Word become a drudgery to you. #
- A man reading a letter from his fiancée doesn't need anyone to convince him to read every line twice — he wants to know her heart, and he re-reads it looking for anything he might have missed. The same man filling out a tax form reads only what's required, looks for the minimum, and is relieved when it's over. Same activity (reading text), completely different posture.
E. The Worship Commitment (48) #
i. Raising of hands, indicates a Worship #
Psalm 134:2 — Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.
Nehemiah 8:6 — And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
- We need to be careful we don’t become so sanctimonious so dignified, that we never praise the Lord!
- It is ok, to lift up hands, and praise the Lord!
1 Timothy 2:8 — I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
ii. Nothing wrong with saying AMEN, and responding to God’s Word! #
iii. Meditate in God’s Word! #
- A good portion of study, is meditation…
- Ask, what is God saying to me?
- What does God want to say to me??
