Personal Consideration #

Psalm 119:57-64

Introduction

The Psalmist in this portion gives us a view into some personal introspection of his own life. Some internal thoughts, of where he is at.

I. David’s Allotment (57-58) #

  • “Thou art my portion”
  • Portion – A part assigned; an allotment, or dividend.

A. Godly portion #

  • Portion is often portrayed in the idea of food. The portion you are served.
  • The Psalmist recognizes God as his portion, what he receives in life.

i. Many desire earthly things #

  • We live in the world, we are flesh and blood.
  • We see and we desire, all of marketing is built off the desire of man to have things.
  • The Psalmist is content with God as his portion!

1 Timothy 6:6–7 —6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

ii. It is easy to get caught up in earthly things #

  • Be reminded, that we cannot take it with us when we are raptured, or die!

iii. Repeated theme #

Psalm 16:5 — The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

  • God is all we need

iv. We should keep his words!! “I have said that I would keep thy words.” #

B. Desire for God #

“I intreated thy favour with my whole heart”

entreat – to ask earnestly, to beseech; to petition or pay with urgency

i. God doesn’t force himself in your life #

    • You were the one who asked him to save you… he didn’t push his way in, uninvited.
    • He wants you to serve him.

ii. Your heart’s desire should be to please God! #

iii. God will be merciful to you! – according to his word. #

II. David’s Adjustment (59-60) #

  • The Bible urges us to consider our ways several times in Scripture

    • In Haggai, in 1 Cor 11 – we should consider our ways!

A. Think about your ways! (59a) #

  • It is wise to stop and think about your life!

  • It is easy to go into autopilot!

    • I drive to the church and home often! There are many times I leave the church, and head home out of habit. I’m not thinking, just driving.
    • Sometimes, I realize… oh, I was supposed to go to the Post Office, or store or somewhere else, and I realize I’m off course.
    • It is easy in life, to set ourselves to autopilot, and forget where we are going!

i. Are you trying to please the Lord? #

“I intreated thy favour with my whole heart.”

ii. When God shows you that you are off course… adjust! #

  • If an airplane takes off from California with a destination of New York, it sets it course. If they are just 1 degree off, but fly the entire trip 1 degree off, they will end up 40 miles away from it’s destination!
  • Close is not enough… you must be on target. Well, preacher, I’m not off course like those others…

iii. Corrective action is necessary! “I turned my feet unto thy testimonies” #

  • When you realize you are off course, the best thing to do is small corrections!

B. Fix problems as soon as possible (60) #

i. Delay causes problems #

  • When God speaks to your heart… get it fixed!

  • Waiting, can make it harder to fix!

    • People who get out of church, the longer they stay away, the harder it is for them to return!

ii. Keep God’s commandments! #

III. David’s Acceptance of injustices (61-62) #

A. David robbed by the wicked #

  • We don’t know if this happened while David was off course, or on course

i. Being off course, you are more likely to have something bad happen! #

  • God uses circumstances to steer us back to him
  • God uses circumstances to punish us!

Hebrews 12:6 — For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

  • God used a world wide flood against the world as judgement
  • God used fire and brimstone against Sodom and Gomorrah
  • God used plagues against Egypt
  • God can use natural things as his judgement!

ii. Bad things happen to good people too! #

  • Not every time is it a judgement from God!

B. Don’t forget God in a storm! (61b) #

C. Be Thankful to God all the time! (62) #

  • It is easier said than done, but is part of contentment with God!

IV. David’s Amiableness to other believers (63-64) #

A. Be-friend those who love God (63) #

  • Not everyone is always going to do right… but love those who do love God!

B. Learn to be merciful as God is! (64) #
