Powerful Words

Psalm 12

Introduction

Psalm 12 is a tremendous chapter. Many messages have been written and preached on verses 6-7. I love studying a passage with the whole context, and especially when there are verses so familiar and used. It is refreshing to see them in context. Sometimes it is enlightening to find out they don’t mean what people have used them for.

I. Fallible Words(1-5)

A. Hurt (1)

i.Godly people fall/fail. Faithful people fall.

ii.Does not mean they were always wicked, or fake, or false intentioned.

iii.It is disappointing & hurts

B. Hinderance (2)

i.Gossip (2a)

ii.Good favor (2b) “double heart”

iii.Goals in their speech – “double heart do they speak”

C. Help (3-5)

i.Who will Help (3) – the LORD!

Psa. 121:1 ¶ I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

The Defiled Church

Revelation 2:12-17

Introduction

We are going to look at one another state of the church. While these very well can represent ages, they very well could stand for stages or states in which a church may be.

Last week, we looked at Smyrna, as the Dependable Church, who stands through persecution. It was pointed out to me afterwards, that even now, the christians in Smyrna face persecution! So, while it is very popular to define these as ages, they also can be a status of current churches.

Revelation 2:18

The Defiant Church

Revelation 2:18-29

Christ - the “Son of God”, eyes like unto a flame of fire (judgement), feet like brass,

Eyes like unto a flame of fire - judgement

feet are like fine brass - righteous

God’s judgement is righteous.

God’s judgement in this portion, can seem harsh to us, but it certainly is not. It is just. We have a very skewed sense of right and wrong, and tolerate much more wickedness than God does.

There are times I open a jar, and wonder how old it is… and it never ceases to amaze me that the jelly, is still preserved. It has been kept from decay, saved from destruction, no special care is needed, it is PRESERVED in that jar!

We are at the Jesus was in the garden praying, the band of soldiers came, and took him in the middle of the night. There was no crowds, just the disciples and Jesus. The disciples all fled, leaving Jesus alone to be carried away.

  • This group was drunk with pride and arrogance
  • They were so full of themselves, it caused them not to think straight.

  • “sought for a witness against Jesus to put him to death”
  • This was not about justice, this was about revenge
  • They were upset because they lost control of the narative.

Wise Life Lessons

Proverbs 23:1-8

As we wade into a new chapter, instead of each verse being it’s own proverb, these proverbs are spread out over a couple of verses. Many of the verses go together. Some Bibles indicate paragraph breaks, many do not. Alternatively, you can look for the end of a sentence.

I. Prudence (1-3) (Contentment)

A. Consider the situation (1)

i. Who you are – ruler = superior -

ii. What is going on… why are you dining there?

  • “Wining and Dining” – to entertain someone with lavish meals, typically in order to gain their favor in some way, either personally or professionally.
  • To sway someone through kind treatment.

B. Contain yourself (2)

i. Don’t be a glutton - “knife to thy throat” - Discipline

ii. Don’t be fooled by the lavish treatment.

  • Many times people who ‘wine and dine’ have to cover up something, causing them to have to wine and dine people to gain sway.
  • Buying people… it is corruption at the most basic level.

C. Covetousness (3) – “be not desirous”

i. As you sit to such a meal, you could be deceived into believing that riches provide peace, happiness, and contentment….

ii. Peace, happiness, and contentment do not come from riches, or physical possessions.

Phil. 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Corruption to the Word

2 Corinthians 2:17

Introduction

We had a great meeting in Colombia. It was great to see Dr. Humberto Gomez. I have worked with him for about 20 years. He is the man responsible for the translation that I whole heartedly endorse, and stand behind as the Word of God in Spanish.

Tonight, I have a lot of information, but I hope to draw it down to the most important things.
