Proverbs 10

Intro.

Up until now, we have been in the introduction to the Book of Proverbs. The word “proverb” is defined as

1. A short sentence often repeated, expressing a well known truth or common fact, ascertained by experience or observation; a maxim of wisdom. (Webster’s American Dictionary 1828)

Each proverb stands on it’s own. Think of them as individual ponds of water, not a continuous flow of a river. We are going to try to take larger themes from each chapter to keep us moving through the book. We could spend the next 5 years going through every verse, but we have a whole Bible to study.

Importance of Words #

Proverbs 13

Intro.

Words have a profound effect on people, and lives. Words are used to express an opinion, or idea that one may have. The Bible gives ample warning about the use of our tongue, mouth, and lips in the form of words. Words have been known to start a war, take the very life from people. Words have also been used to build some very successful people in the world. Words were used to frame our very Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Words can be used to accurately record history, or misconstrue historical facts. Words are important!

God’s Way is Best #

Proverbs 16:1-5

Intro.

LORD is used more times in this chapter of Proverbs than any other chapter in the entire book of Proverbs. It is used 11 times. There is probably something we should get from that.

Is. 55:6 ¶ Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Is. 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. Is. 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Four Features of a Fool #

Intro.

Fool is a prominent word in Chapter 17. We do understand that the Proverbs are not a continuous flow of thoughts, but rather a collection of wise sayings. By selecting a prominent word, by no means am I covering the entirety of the chapter. I have only selected a few proverbs that appear in the same chapter, and teaching on them. There are many themes, and lessons that can be learned from chapter 17 that will not be touched tonight… so by all means, do take the time to read Proverbs 17, and see other things written in there.
